Top tips to save fuel and money

  • Make sure your tyres are pumped up to the correct pressure. Driving with soft tyres can add up to 2% to your fuel bills. Soft tyres are also dangerous causing your vehicles to roll and wallow. Don’t overinflate your tyres either. Yes, you will improve your fuel economy more with slightly larger tyres and less friction on the road but your vehicle will be unstable and not brake as efficiently and this is really dangerous.

  • Avoid sharp braking and accelerating. Read the road ahead and roll up to roundabouts, junctions and traffic lights. You'll save as much as 30% on fuel costs. There is no point in rushing and then having to brake suddenly. Never just coast to save fuel, vehicle control must not be compromised.

  • Stick to speed limits. When you're driving on motorways and other roads stick to the speed limit. 75 mph uses far more fuel that 65 mph. As well as being a safer speed, slowing by 10mph can save up to 40p on fuel for every 10 miles.

  • Drive with a ‘soft’ foot. Reduce the number of revs you use. If you get the revs right you will not notice much of a loss of power.

  • Try to maintain a constant speed . Doing 56mph uses 25 per cent less fuel than 70mph and a smoother driving style can bring significant fuel saving.

  • Shop around. Keep an eye open for garages selling slightly cheaper fuel. This can sometimes mean 50p to £3.00 a tankful saving.

  • Keep the car well serviced. Regular servicing is inexpensive. Change the plugs, oil, filters and check the bearings and ensure that the brakes are not dragging. Air filters get dirty and can seriously reduce your fuel economy. Replace them as soon as they get dirty. They're inexpensive and easy to change if you have your car's handbook. Or just find a reliable local garage. Hotter engines are more economical than colder ones. Make sure the thermostatic control is working properly.

  • Fully disengage the handbrake when you drive off! Just make sure you haven’t got into this bad habit.

  • Avoid idling the engine for long periods of time.  Turn it off at railway crossings, long traffic jams, etc...

  • Switch off your air con. Instead open your air vents, not the windows. Using air conditioning significantly increases fuel consumption.

  • Avoid using things that drain the battery. Because extra pull occurs on the Alternator requiring more fuel (air-con is very noticeable). The other big drains are rear window heater, blowers & heaters, headlights.

  • Reduce drag . By removing roof racks and carriers when not in use. Driving with the window open also increases drag and lowers fuel economy. Remove unnecessary luggage, take out all the junk you carry around. Less weight = more fuel economy. Keep the important stuff like spare wheel, jack etc. avoid heavy accessories and wide tyres that add rolling resistance.

  • Don’t overfill the tank. Why fill the tank up to the very brim? If you do so, you may be carrying around additional fuel, which in turn means that you have more weight on board than is necessary. That extra weight will itself reduce fuel efficiency. Only fill the tank if you see a garage selling cheap fuel.

  • Toll road can save you money. It may seem odd but choosing a toll road  over alternative routes can work out cheaper. Although it costs you in the short term, the surface is so much better that it slows down the wear on your tyres and your fuel usage, so saves you money in the long term. Before you leave home consider which is the best route in terms of time and money.

  • If your car has a 'cruise control' setting, use it on long journeys. It'll help you save on fuel.

  • Reverse in when you park. When you start off again, the engine will be cold and at its most fuel inefficient. If you can drive smoothly away without having to reverse when the engine is cold, not only will you save fuel you will also have better visibility.

  • Consider a vehicle's fuel economy before you buy. The difference between a fuel efficient and not-so-efficient £10,000 vehicle can be about £12 a week.

  • Use common sense when driving. All the tips above will save you money but if you also use Activ8 your savings will be even greater.
